POST STUDY VISA FOR STUDENTS IN USA
- The USA offers a post-study work visa called OPT for international students, allowing them to apply and gain practical experience in their field of study.
OPT Duration in the USA
- Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows international students (F-1 visa holders) to work in the U.S. in their field of study.
Standard OPT
- 12 months for all eligible students (both Bachelor's and Master's).
STEM OPT Extension
- An additional 24 months is available for students with a degree in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
- So, STEM students can work for up to 36 months (3 years) under OPT.
Getting an H-1B Visa During or After OPT
- While working on OPT, a student can apply for an H-1B visa (a work visa for specialty occupations).
- Employers must sponsor the H-1B petition during the annual H-1B lottery (usually held in March).
- If selected and approved, the student can transition from OPT to H-1B status.
- If the H-1B start date is October 1 and OPT ends before that, "Cap-Gap" extension may allow the student to stay and work legally between OPT end and H-1B start.
- If the H-1B is not selected or denied, the student may continue on OPT (if time remains) or explore options like further education or change of visa status.
